laser hair removal

Laser Hair Removal explained

Laser hair removal uses light-based technology to reduce and eliminate unwanted hair growth. This cutting-edge technology, represents a tremendous advancement in the aesthetic marketplace, and offers significant advantages compared to other forms of hair removal. Employing vacuum-assist technology, the LightSheer Duet allows Aesthetics by Design's trained technicians to easily access all reaches of the body, comfortably removing unwanted hair within minutes without the use of gels and other topical anesthetics.

the science of laser hair removal

Hair growth occurs via a series of stages, with each hair follicle spending the majority of its life cycle in the active growth phase called the anagen phase. However, for approximately six to eight weeks each hair follicle enters a phase of regression known as the catagen phase, followed by a dormant phase known as the telogen phase, with approximately 10 - 15% of hair in telogen at any given time. Laser hair removal works by delivering a high energy laser beam to the hair follicle, damaging the growth center located at the base of the follicle. Only the follicles in anagen phase are sensitive to the laser energy, and during the six to eight weeks of the catagen and telogen phases, the hair follicles are not be damaged by the light. For this reason, a series of laser hair removal treatments are required, and are typically spaced six to eight weeks apart in an effort to destroy all the follicles.

LightSheer Duet laser hair removal system

The LightSheer Duet laser hair removal system emits near-infrared light via a diode laser source. This laser light's wavelength is absorbed by the pigment in the hair, selectively damaging the bulb of the hair follicle. During hair removal treatment, the laser is pulsed on and off very quickly. The duration of each pulse is just long enough to damage the follicle, while the system’s unique, patented contact-cooling hand piece, the ChillTip, helps protect the skin by conductive cooling during the laser energy delivery.

The High Speed LightSheer® Duet produces a larger beam of highly-concentrated light.

The light emitted is well absorbed by the pigment located in the hair follicles (melanin).

As the hair follicle heats up from the light, the hair shaft and bulb are damaged.

Damage reduces the hair’s ability to re-grow, resulting in permanent hair reduction.

Questions + Answers

Why should I use the LightSheer Diode Laser System rather than the methods I’ve been using for years?

The LightSheer Diode Laser System’s design provides for enhanced comfort during hair removal treatment, minimal risk of infection, speed, and accuracy. Since the system uses a unique cooling handpiece, it minimizes skin irritation that other methods may create. Since it is non-invasive (no needles to penetrate the skin), the risk of introducing bacteria into the skin is reduced. Because the system is fast, it allows for larger areas to be treated, considerably increasing the efficiency of the hair removal process, which allows more patients to be treated during a typical day. Finally, the LightSheer Diode Laser is a precise instrument that can be adjusted to damage only the hair follicle while minimally affecting the surrounding skin. Does the LightSheer work on tanned or different skin colors?

The LightSheer diode laser system safely and effectively treats all skin types (Fitzpatrick Skin Types I-VI) as well as tanned skin. For darker skin types and people with tans, appropriate fluences are generally lower and appropriate pulse widths are generally longer to prevent damage to the epidermis. Using the appropriate laser treatment parameters, however, benefits people with all skin types. Choose laser hair removal with the LightSheer to experience the benefits first-hand!

Are the Results Permanent?

The LightSheer laser has been cleared by the FDA for hair removal and permanent hair reduction on all skin types and tanned skin.  To achieve a satisfactory level of clearance, 4-7  laser hair removal treatments are typically required.

Am I a good candidate?

The laser targets the hair color and acts as a conduit to kill the root. The hair must be dark for the laser to be effective, i.e., no blondes, reds, or grey.

What should I do prior to my first treatment?

Please make sure to shave the area prior to your treatments, with no waxing or plucking! Also, please refrain from sun exposure six weeks prior to the treatment. There will be an additional $50 charge for shaving.
